Abstract: We report on the synthesis of a new material with a novel quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure consisting of chains of Cu and M ions: Cu2MSiO5 with M = Co, Ni. Large, centimeter-sized single crystals of Cu2CoSiO5 have been grown by the floating-zone technique and roughly hexagonally shaped single crystals of Cu2NiSiO5 have been grown by means of chemical vapor transport. Cu2CoSiO5 (Cu2NiSiO5) orders antiferromagnetically below TN∼ 15 K (12.5 K). Polarized neutron scattering experiments on Cu2CoSiO5 reveal incommensurate magnetism below TN with propagation vectors k±=±(∼0.200.3), and magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a large unquenched orbital moment of about 1μB per Co ion.
