Abstract: Neutrons are an essential tool in science and research for probing the structure and dynamics of matter from the mesoscale to the picoscale and from seconds to femtoseconds. To release neutrons for research, the commonly used methods are fission in nuclear reactors, spallation using high-power proton accelerators, and nuclear reactions with low-energy proton accelerators. The first two techniques have been used very successfully in Europe for decades and offer the highest neutron flux with a broad range of applications. More than 8000 users utilize the available neutron sources in Europe, requesting nearly twice the available capacity offered per year.
