Abstract: A new CHON AmSEL system was developed based on PrOH-BPTD as the americium-selective complexant. Previous investigations (see deliverable D1.1) found it to show sufficient efficiency and selectivity for americium over trivalent lanthanides and curium. PrOH-BPTD is able to complex Am(III) at nominal Am concentrations up to 20 mmol L−1 Am(III), without precipitate of third phase formation. High selectivity is also achieved in the presence of nominal concentrations of Ln(III), although a saturation effect is observed, reducing the selectivity over light lanthanides (especially La(III)). The resistance to alpha radiolysis was found to be excellent. The non-lanthanide fission products Mo, Sr, Zr, and Pd could potentially be co-stripped with Am, but can be handled using masking agents and nitric acid scrubbing. Only Tc was found to likely follow Am, if present in the PUREX raffinate.
